Hokie Heart |
|
|
|
"My name is April S.
I am 36 years old and I have been a dedicated member of the Hokie Nation
since fall of 1997. Last year I got really sick and found out that I
had a very large hole in my heart, which would require me to have open
heart surgery to save my life. Needless to say, I was scared out of my
mind and went through a pretty life changing event.
|
"I had surgery in July of
last year at Duke University Hospital. Despite being at Duke, I
insisted that my whole hospital room be filled with Hokie gear and would
joke with my doctors about having a Hokie Heart. Fortunately, with all the
strength and support I received from all of my blood family and my Hokie
family . . . and having a strong Hokie Heart . . . I came through
the surgery with flying colors (maroon & orange of course!).

My doctor’s released me
just in time to be present for the VT vs Duke game at Duke. Although
it took almost the whole first quarter for me to make it from the parking
lot to our seats, I was determined not to miss the game! When I
finally made it, I was so out of breath, sore and worn out that I thought
I wasn’t going to be able to make it through to the end of the game.
"But then I looked around
and saw the sea of Hokie fans in full blown Hokie Mode filling up almost
the whole Duke University Stadium. It gave me a feeling of
determination that filled my heart and I was able to stand up and cheer
our Hokies on for the entire rest of the game.

"That evening not only was
I thankful for the Hokies victorious win, but also for having another
chance at life and being able to be back at Duke with my big strong Hokie
Heart on the mend and for being on the road to recovery. I was able
to continue to improve and recover throughout the year and to be present
for almost all of the games last year. I am now pretty much fully
recovered and ready to cheer on the Hokies for this year's season!!!!!"
